I often hike the unbeaten path
To search for signs of yesterday
Treasures of life from the past
Still sitting where they were laid
I saw several stones placed in a row
Undisturbed for years in the forest shade
A chestnut fence fallen years ago
Used to stand tall ‘round the unmarked graves
Chorus:
The stones show where the people lay
Names unknown in the present day
Simple memorials for a few to praise
Anonymous beds of unmarked graves
The winds of time has had its way
Blowing their history into decay
A cabin site the forest reclaimed
All that remains near the unmarked graves
There were few tombstones in those days
The family knew who was buried where
Any descendants long gone away
Their stories vanished with no fanfare
The stones show where the people lay
Names unknown in the present day
Simple memorials for a few to praise
Anonymous beds of unmarked graves
The setting sun will one day fade
Somewhere beyond the western shore
Sending our history into decay
Only to rise again no more
That day when mother Earth will die
She'll take away the comfort she gave
This nameless rock will timelessly fly
It will be our common unmarked grave
This rock will show where we all lay
Perhaps we'll see it from far away
Our memorial in a future day
It will become our unmarked grave
