Our Smoky Mountain Cabin in Fontana Village, North Carolina

The Joyce Kilmer Wilderness area, near Robbinsville, NC, includes original, unlogged forests which hosts Poplar, Hemlock, and Maple trees over 500 years old

The bear we saw along the Newfound Gap Road. We call him "Buddy Bear" (Parrotheads will understand) I was about 40 yards from him when I took these pics. It was a bit of a tense moment when he came down from the tree.

We took a very nice trip through the Great Smoky Mountains aboard the Great Smoky Mountain Railway. The Autumn colors are evident.

The following pictures are from the Fontana Resevoir. Every five years, the water is emptied from the resevoir for dam inspection. When this happens, clues of the past appear. The original Fontana Village, which is normally under tons of water, is revealed. The remains of the Fontana Mining Company are seen. Seen are old foundations of homes, rock borders of gardens, and a small spring house still intact. We were lucky enough to have a knowledgable tour guide, Lance Holland (see his Appalachian History link below), who had old pictures describing what we were looking at.
