City Fool

I journey to the
woods
To escape my urban cage
I heard a call from far away
To reflect on a life gone astray
Under the stars an owl asks “Who?”
I reply “A city fool”
To try to do what is true
I follow an invisible pull
To the Blue Ridge mountain views
Happiness eludes this city fool
These electronic ways
To keep us occupied
It seems a conspiracy
Lets us think that we’re free
I have but simple goals
I don’t care about the Jones’
I prefer simplicity
Not a crazy society
Under the stars an owl asks “Who?”
I reply “A city fool”
To try to do what is true
I follow an invisible pull
To the Blue Ridge mountain views
Happiness eludes this city fool
The owl sees more than I do
Without eyes covered by wool
He can sense under the moon
An end to the life I once
knew
Thoreau found his
true thrill
Somewhere lies my Walden Pond
A place where time stands still
The pull to rural life is too strong
Under the stars an owl asks “Who?”
I reply “A city fool”
To try to do what is true
I follow an invisible pull
To the Blue Ridge mountain views
Happiness eludes this city fool
I breathe the fresh breath
of trees
No concrete or asphalt streets
In these woods I understand
Harmony permeates this land
Happiness may yet consume
This enlightened city fool
